PACKET MAIL

GB stamps went on sale at Kingston on May 8lh 1858 with the proviso that they were only to be
used on packet mail and this restriction lasted unti] January 31 st 1859 when they became available
also for use on internal mail.
These two pieces show the correct postal rate for packet mail with early date-stamps from Lilliput
and Savannah-La-Mar, both with the Kingston ' AOJ ' obliterator. In the case of the Savannah-La-
Mar item it appears that the stamps were applied after the date-stamp leaving the actual
cancellation to the Kingston office as was intended.
