Before the arrival of GB stamps and the numeral cancellers in 1858, there was only one 'Free'
handstamp in use in Jamaica and it was used for Post Office maiJ. The G.P.O. Record Books
reveal that these handstamps were sent to Jamaica and Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 9th
1843 and were only to be used on local mail.
It was usual for the use of this handstamp to be countersigned by the official concerned and the

last recorded day of use was July 4th 1849 but r notice this example is backstamped ' Kingston'

on October 21 st 1850.
