To save time in the Kingston Post Office, a brass handstamp like the above, was sent to Jamaica
in November 1846 for use on Kingston packet mail. This procedure remained in being until the
6d. packet rate was introduced in 1854.
The writer has made a small error with his 'per steamer March 24th 1839' as the Kingston eds and
the London receiver mark are dated March 24th and April 24th 1849 respectively.
