This is another letter from the ·Rev. Francis R. Holland' correspondence from hi father living in
Salem, North Carolma. It let Salem on October 17 1846 paid to Jamaica and has a Kingston
transit mark on the re\ erse dated December IOlli. The internal postage rate in Jamaica at this
time were 4d for distances under 60 miles, 6d. for those bet\\een 60 & 100 mile and 8clfor
distances over 100 miles from Kingston
T he clerk who dealt \Vith the mail for the Leeward (Southside) Post Road had three \\oOOen
handstamps made for his own use to save himself a considerable a.mount of time and this 6d is
one such, Mayhill being 63 miles from Kingston.
