Jamaica started to use ' PAID' handstamps about J810, and although they were superseded by
adhesives as an indication that postage had been paid, were not completely withdrawn until 1874.
This cover was written on December 14th 1844 with a manuscript 1/- and was carried on the
' Defiance' transiting Panama on January 2nd (via Frederick W. Byrne, Forwardmg Agent) arriving
in Lima on February 4th. The answer on April 28th(!) confirmed that 'the amount due to Dr.

Escorichnela shall be duly attended to'.
