Whereas many of the straight line Post Town handstamps were first used in the 18th century, the
first semicircular or circular forms became current after 1805, when the capital, Kingston,
received the first one. These were phased out after 1885 and replaced by the ' Squared Circle'
type.
Kingston was given 12 types of date stamp (for one of the earlier types see Morant Bay).
This letter was written in Kingston on August glh 1843, with the correct rate in manuscript on the
front (1 /-) , Dublin date stamp September 5th and Limerick eds the next day.
