NEW 1839 RATE

The 2/2d. rate to London was still in force when this letter was written on February 25th 1839 but
as it had two enclosures (the letter mentions an enclosed bill) it was charged triple rate. The
addressee has written that it was received on April 15th and answered on J u n e 21 51
•
In 1839 a new postal rate came into force for Deeds and Legal Documents assessed on weight
alone, as a few years previously a packet of documents had been sent to UK with 50 pages @
2/2d. per page at a cost of £5-8-4d. After the new rate became effective such a packet would have
cost only exactly £ 1.
