Commercial Rooms acted as an unofficial post office and fonvarding agency for letters. These
were handed to the clerk in charge who handstamped them and then passed them to the next
ship's captain who was gomg in that direction. After 1842, the Royal Mail Steam Packet
Company was so regular and fast that the Rooms gradually became unnecessary and closed.
This letter was \\Tittcn in Kingston on July 3nJ 1834, then handed to the agency, rated 1/7d. and is
marked with 'Liverpool Ship Letter' and a London receiver dated September 6th.
