Port Morant (A65) is on the south coast about 40 miles east of Kingston. In the year following the
British conquest in 1655, Mr. Stokes, the Governor of Nevis, arrived here with 1500 settlers. In
1694 the French landed and destroyed every settlement between here and Port Royal - a distance
of some 20 miles before they were repelled.
This item is yet another letter to Messrs. Barclay & McDowell, written and posted on October 21 81
1859 - they certainly seem to have been prosperous merchants.
