Whereas previously the postal rate had been assessed on the number of sheets in a letter, in 1840
the G.P.0. instituted a new system of postal charges based on weight, and in 1843 this idea was

extended to the colonies. The consequence was of course that writing paper became flimsy and

more easily tom and envelopes were less frequently used.
These two items reflect the changing habits - the envelope has a crest on the flap probably from a
richer correspondent, and the part-front shows a double rate letter to Kingston said by Foster to be
unique.
Morant Bay (A59) lies near the SE tip of Jamaica and was the scene ofthe rebellion in 1865.
