Montego Bay was the second largest town in Jamaica, after Kingston, and was the terminus of the
railway from the capital, situated on the north coast and 116 miles from Kingston in the parish of
St. James. A large Arawak viJJage was found here when Columbus landed in 1494.
This letter was written by a Mr. James Hewett on October 25th 1859 to Messrs, Middleton Freu &
Co., Kingston, asking for a bale ofsome material to be shipped to him at the earliest opportunity.
His letter was received on the 26th and the purchase was sent to him on the 27th.
