Highgate (A47) was so named because it was situated on the brow of a hill, 32 miles from
Kingston on the road to Port Maria on the north coast.
This cover is backstamped 'Highgate-Jamaica July 15th 1859' (Type P4) and docketed by Michael
Levy that day. At the present time only 5 covers are known with GB issues from this office.
In the autumn of 1858, Messrs. Ford & Gall (the addressees) secured pennission from the
postmaster to sell postage stamps to members of the public, provided that the proper regulations
were observed.
