This cover left Grange llill on January 25th 1859, is backstamped Kingston the following day and
arrived in London on February 151h.
ln November 1858, consent was given for GB stamps to be used on internal mail whereas
previously their use had been limited to prepayment of packet postage. The obliterators for use in
the various Post Towns did not arrive until March 151 1859, and District postmasters in this
interval were told not to cancel GB stamps, but apply the locaJ date-stamp leaving Kingston P.O.
to cancel stamps with their 'AOI '. Some postmasters obeyed this edict .....
