PORT ROYAL

In the l i11 century, Port Royal bad the sobriquet 'The Wickedest City in Christendom' because of

its debauched lifestyle. However, all was to change with a devastating earthquake in 1692 - a
contemporary account describes the havoc - buildings falling, tidal waves, flooding, people
shrieking with fear, drowning and the horror of people falling into the crevices of the earth but
before they could escape, the earth closing up again and crushing them to death. The moralists of
the time must have had a field day!
This registered cover lefi Port Royal on January 29th 1901 - the month ofQueen Victoria's death -
and arrived in London on February 14th.
