This Newport cover to London left on February 1st 1897 and arrived in London on the 18th.
The Newport office opened in 1862 aod this handstamp was used unti1 1908. Previously Newport
had ' A59' which had even earlier been allocated to Morant Bay.
The 2 Y2 d. rate to UK was not to last much longer, as on May 24th 1899 Jamaica joined the
Imperial penny postage scheme, and letters from that date cou1d be sent to any part of the British
Empire at Id. per Y2 oz.
