The U.P.U. which Jamaica joined on April 1st 1877, frowned upon numeral oblitcrators, preferring
handstamps which supplied the name of the originating office without reference to a code.
Mount Charles post office opened in 1874 and had used 'A80' (with large size numerals) but later
reverted to a type of postmark (Pl 1) first introduced in the 1850's.
This card from Kingston was received in Mount Charles on February 17th 1882. In 1884 this
office was moved 2 miles and renamed Hagley Gap when it still used •A80', but now the
numerals were about 3 mm. shorter.
