The Imperial penny postage scheme had been in effect for less than a fortnight when this letter
was sent to England and now the Royal Mail Steamer took only 16 days for the journey - this
letter leaving Kingston on June 6th 1899 and arriving in Northampton on the 22°d.
This office only opened in September 1894 and used a temporary rubber datestamp made locally
for nearly 3 months before the permanent steel double-ring obliterator arrived from the G.P.O.,
London.
