Jamaica Registration: Registration Labels.

The introduction of labels in Kingston.
There was no prior public announcement nor subsequent report of registration labels. They are not in
the detailed Rules for District Postmasters and their Assistants issued in January 1909, which still
instruct postmasters to write onto the envelope a registration number copied from the receipt.
Lant claimed that registration labels began in 1908 outside Kingston, and at Kingston in April 1909.

The earliest label in this collection, 10 February 1909, used at Kingston on a cover to Germany.

                                                                                   4½d (2½d UPU rate and 2d

                                                                                   Kingston:

                                                                                   Several MS registration numbers.

                                                                                   Redirected.

                                                                                   · opened and resealed with blue
                                                                                   Postamt seal.

In 1909 and 1910 Kingston resorted to overprinting the superfluous labels of Ginger Hill (closed
1908) and Hopewell (not opened until 1915, so it is unclear why it had a stock of labels in 1910).
Whether this was to alleviate a shortage at Kingston or to use up stock is not known. It is likely that
only one sheet of 50, numbered 1 to 50, was used from Hopewell, all on 6 May 1910.

           6d (4d double
