The Falmouth post office used the A38 obliterator from November 1862 until the introduction of the
squared circle date-stamp (c. 1883). However, early in 1881, the original obliterator was lost or
damaged beyond repair, necessitating the introduction of a replacement. While awaiting the arrival of
the replacement, the Falmouth single ring date-stamp was pressed into service as a stamp canceller.
