Any letter or other mnil matter may be registered on prepayment of lhe registration
fee and postage. Pnckets containing mone~· a nd jewellery t must be registered a~td
must be prepaid at the let/er ralc of postage. Any pocket found to conlaill11101lty or jewellery
but not registered, will bo liable to a surcharge equal to double the registration fee.
A letter must not be accepted for registration unless it is it! perfect ord,'T. A registered
letter fastened with gummed paper cnn only be accepted if the sender signs his name
across the slip of gummed paper.

JI. COMPENSATION FOR LOSS.
1. The Postmaster for Jamaica is not legally liable for any loss or inconvenience which
may arise from t he loss, damage, delny, non-delivery, or mi~-delivery of anything sent by
post, and he does not, in any circumstances, pay compensation in respect of unregistered
letters, post cards, printed matter, packets, newspapers or local parcels. But. subject
to the rules stated below, he pnys compensation voluntarily and as an act of grace in
tho.e cases and in those cases only in which there has been a total loss of the contents of
correspondence of the following descriptions not being loss due to breakage or damage.
2. No compensation is given in respect of correspondence compulsorily registered.
3. Compensation in respect of money of any kind (coin, notes, orders, cheques, stamps,
&c.) will only be given in those cases in which the money is enclosed in one of the rel?is-
tercd letter envelopes sold by the Post Office and the packet is tendered for transmissaon
by registered letter post. The compensation given in respect of coin, which should
be packed in such a way t hat it cannot move about, will in no case exceed £2.
4. It must appear that the loss occurred in the post, and did not arise wholly or in part
by t he fault of the sender, ns, for instance, from inadequate fastening.
5. The compensation gh·en will not exceed t he value of the article lost. The right is
reserved of re-instating the contents of an envelope instead of giving pecuniary compen-
sation.
