PROBLEMS WITH USE - OVERSEAS

Any cards used at the overseas rate of 3d are rare. In contrast to the local cards, overseas postal clerks
could not be expected to be familiar with the impressed handstamp used to indicate postage in Jamaica.

                                                   'Paid' added in Manuscript

Second Provisional Issue 3d Card (Type SI) postmarked St Ann's Bay, 9 July 1877 to London.
No arrival mark except for a red manuscript '2Y2' thought to confirm pre-payment

Second Provisional Issue 3d card (Type S2) to Bern, Switzerland postmarked Falmouth 9 May 1878.
Transit mark Kingston 10 May and red ' Paid' London handstamp dated 20 May, with Bern arrival 29 May.
The use of the 3d Provisional card after the issue of the Regular postcards in late 1877 may indicate that either
the initial supply of regular postcards had all been used (this is known to have occurred) or that Falmouth was
using up old stock. The message on the card indicates that it was not prompted by philatelic use, which is
unusual for known used 3d provisional cards!
