SECOND PROVISIONAL ISSUE VARIETIES

The notation for Types S5 and S6 follows Bacon, in the Swarbrick and Swetland account these are reversed.
A distinguishing feature ofboth S5 and S6 is that the cut cards are of a larger size.

There is some doubt as to whether 1d examples of either card exists and used examples of all values are rare.
It is possible that S5 and S6 were produced after the release of the Regular cards (in Nov. 1877) and prior to th~
arrival of additional cards from London. Used 3d cards are rare and all known examples (totalling 3 or 4) were sent
to well-known British collectors.

It is clear that collectors at the time were aware of the various reprints and varieties
of the second provisional cards and that the demand was greater for mint examples.
