Claremont (A34) was a post office with little business, situated in the centre of a hilly district in

St.Ann's Parish, about 50 miles NW ofKingston.
At this time, the postal rate for newspapers was Yz d. so the 1 Yz d. was correct for the 3 papers.

This diagonal bisection of the Id. stamp was authorised by a P.O. notice dated November 201h
1861 and lasted until December 181 1872. The first Yz d. Jamaican stamp had been introduced on
October 29th 1872.
