Letters could be registered from 1850 onwards but for many years the Postmaster merely wrote
' Registered' on the letter in red ink. The first registration mark of which this is an example, was
sent out in 1878 and was used for 16 years. The first registration envelopes were provided in
1881. This letter was posted on December 8th 1886, received in London on the 27th and
Colchester on the 28th.
From J858 a fee of6d. per letter was charged in addition to the normal packet postage rate.
