Savannah-La-Mar (A75), the chief town of Westmoreland, lies on the south coast near the western
end of the island. In 1744, the town was devastated by a tidal wave and on October 3rd 1780 it
was again destroyed by a hurricane. Despite these misfortunes the town prospered and had a busy
post office.
This letter is backstamped Savannah-La-Mar April lst l859 and Kingston April 13th. This delay is
so unusual that 1 suspect that the appropriate slug was lost -as sometimes happened- and the
postmaster forgot to complete the date in manuscript, as this addition can be seen on some other
items.
