Spanish Town (A76) was the capital of Jamaica under the Spaniards and also under British rule
until 1870, despite having been sacked by Sir Anthony Shirley in 1597 and suffering severely
during the British conquest in 1655. In 1791 there was an earthquake which destroyed two thirds
of the houses. The town waned and Trollope in 1861 described it as ' a city of the very dead'. In
I 870 the capital was transferred to Kingston.
This entire has the Spanish Town eds for March 21st 1859 and is backstamped Kingston the
following day.
Note also the double-ring ' Too Late' stamp which was in use from 1856 till 1874.
