The long-standing privilege for soldiers and sailors, namely, that l d. postage from anywhere in the
world to UK was the correct postage for serving men, provided the letter was countersigned by an
officer, came under threat in 1869, but the outcry was such that the privilege was restored.
This letter to Tunbridge Wells left Port Royal on September glh 1891 and arrived on the 24th.
