Maritime Jamaica: Hamburg American Line.

            The Hamburg American Line (HAPAG) was founded in 1847 and served the Caribbean from 1870.

            The “Prinz” ships were built as specialist fruit carriers and passenger cruise ships. The Prinz August
            Wilhelm, 4,733 tons, 736 passengers, was built in 1902 and was in service on the New York –
            Jamaica route from 1902 to 1914, when it was scuttled to avoid confiscation.

            The reverse sets out a dinner menu and dinner concert programme for 4 February 1909.
            The card depicts the ship entering Port Antonio harbour, the main port of the United Fruit Company.
            The card is postmarked Titchfield, the seasonal post office of the UFC - owned Titchfield Hotel.
