Several US fruit companies were consolidated in 1899 to form the United Fruit Company under the
slogan of ‘The Great White Fleet’. They dominated the fruit shipping trade of the Caribbean and
Central America and offered luxury cruises. They owned plantations and hotels. Their main port in
Jamaica was Port Antonio. They were the main carriers of mail to the USA from Kingston or directly
from Port Antonio. Regular scheduled sailings to Jamaica ended in 1941.
The SS Ulua 7,452 tons, 171 passengers, was built in 1917 and was in service from 1920 until 1946.

The SS Veragua 6,982 tons, 100 passengers, Veragua cachet (Rego type 06078/2)
was built in 1932 and was in service until 1958. on censored cover to the USA, 1941.
