                                   HANDSTAMPS  AND  POSTMARKS.

                                        Foster  - M-U SAC  4.
                This  Fourth  type  of  censor  handstamp  was  the  general

           censor handstamp  issued  at Unit  level,  and  consists  of  the
           letters  U"  and  "Su  in  serif  print  4 lnm  high  and  -the  words

           "PASSED  BY"  and  "ARMY  EXAMINER"  in  sans  seri:f  print -;  mm

           high.      The  handstamp  includes  ~e Examiner's  number  in  a
           double  oval  :frame  and  the  whole  is  enclosed  in  a  :fra.me  37  mm
           x  25  mm.       These  handstamps  are  known  struck  in black,  red

           or  purple  ink,  and  to  date  the  following  numbers  have  been
           recorded  ~or ~amaica,  namely,  lOO,  101,  102,  112,  113,  116

                                             Number  100.

           This  number  is known  in  both  red  and  purple,  the  red  being
           recorded  on  mail  from  the Transportation Office,  Kingston,
           and  the  purple  on  mail  from  the  marine  detachment  at Portland
           Bight.       One  can  only  assume  tbere£ore  that  the  marine

           detachment  were  issued with  an  ''ArMy"  censor handstamp  at
           this period,  and  the  example  shown  below  is before  ~he date

           of the  establishment  o£  ~he Fleet Post o££ice.
