                                         3d Value - Christopher Columbus

The stamp depicts Columbus’ landing, reputed to be at Discovery Bay in the North East of the island.

Christopher Columbus “discovered” Jamaica on 14 May 1494, during his second voyage to the New World.
On his fourth voyage, in 1503, he became stranded at Puerto Bueno (Dry Harbour)
when the last two ships from his flotilla rotted away.
Columbus established the first European settlement on the island and had to wait a year before being rescued.
One of his crew, Diego Mendez, had to cross 500 miles to Hispaniola in a canoe to obtain relief.
