One penny: varieties.
On top of the stereotype varieties that run down entire columns, damage to the forme produced one-
off plate varieties that are constant at a single position in the pane. Such forme varieties are found on
all values and on both left and right panes, proving that the overprint forme was 60 set.

Cracked first I, row 1, position 4.

The cracked first I was present from the first printing, though the extent of the crack varies.
Although it is a forme variety, the cracked first I is related to stereotype characteristics. All column 4
shows a recurrent weak first I, which sometimes shows in various rows. Only in row 1 did this latent
weakness inherited from the stereotype produce a constant variety.

Although a widely recognised variety, the nick in O at 10 o'clock did not appear, at least on the 1d,
until the third printing, in 1896. ↓
