As mentioned earlier, mail from the prisoners in the "Bethania" was
censored b y off ices o f the Royal Navy at Port Royal and the evidence
from the cover below indicates that this censorship was carried out by
by the Senior Officer .

Cover f r om a prisoner on board the "Bethania" to Thuringen endorsed
i n black ink Prisoner of War and Free which bears the handstamp in
purple of the SENIOR OFFICER/PORT ROYAL, JAMAICA acting in his capacity
as a mil itary censor . The cover bears on the reverse Port Royal and
Kingston daters of the 14w September 1914 . The cover also bears in
red P . C. within a 30mm diameter single circle , this is a United
Kingdom censorship marking applied there in transit to Germany .

Below the cover is shown an illustration of the Senior Officer' s
handstamp .
