The usual process was for a letter to be advertised, either in the local newspaper or on a board outside the Post Office.
If unclaimed after four weeks the letter would be returned to the RLB in Kingston.
1867 front from the UK to Duncans PO, Jamaica
Oxford, UK 14 Apr 1867 by the Douro packet from Southampton arriving Kingston 8 May 1867.
The letter would have been taken to the DUNCANS PO where ‘Left the Parish’ was added.
The letter would then have been returned to Kingston.
The boxed ‘UNCLAIMED’ mark would have been applied in Kingston.
This unclaimed mark has not previously been recorded.
