‘Autres Objets
The UPU category of ‘Autres Objets’ covers post bthat is neither letters nor cards (hence the ‘Autres’)
but other papers that are not urgent.
On 2 Mar 1953 the Jamaica Post Office introduced 2nd class air mail. The reduced rate was applicable to unsealed Christmas
cards (but not post cards), small packets, commercial papers, printed matter and samples. These were designated by new
handstamps struck in violet reading ‘A.O.’.
The 1950s AO rate to the UK was 9d,
and to the western hemisphere 4d,
half the letter rate.
