Jamaica: The Vendryes Official

                                                       Third setting: printing.
The third setting is thought to have been printed in March 1891. Vendryes maintained that this had
been the first setting printed, although the the earliest known date of use is 21 March 1891, which
makes it the third setting to be issued.
Vendryes also claimed: “I composed this myself and I personally machined the edition.” This may
explain why it is distinct from the other settings, which his employees may have composed.

Some strikes of the third setting are liable to slight doubling of letters, not true double overprints, but
a slight shadowing of the lines of letters, especially at the edges of the pane. The shadowing is
always to the left of letters at the left edge and to the right of letters at the right edge. This may have
been caused by a double movement of paper slipping and curling so that the edges caught the type a
second glancing impression as the platen moved up and down.
