Insured letters c:mnot be sen t by a ll t he routes available for ordinary letters. and
t.herrforc, may occupy 11 longer time in transit.
Insured articles have all the safeguards of the registration system; and. suhj~ct to the
following regulations, comrensation will be paid if an insured article or any 11art of its
contents is lost or damaged in the post.
An insured article may not be addressed to initials or in pencil.
H may not bear any erasure or Mrrection in the address nt the t ime of posting.
A certificate of posting must a lways be obtained by t he sender. P arlicull\rs of the
amou nt for which the let,ter has been insured ~hould be entered ou t he certificate, and
the sender should M once sntigfy him~elf t h'\t t he entry is correct. R e may obtain an
advice of the delivery of an insured letter under the conditions shown at page 46.
All t.he seals on the insured letter must be of the same kind of w>tx, and must bear
distinct impre~sions of the same pri vntc device. A coin may not be used for sealing;
and the device may not consist merely of straight, crossed, or curved lines which could
readily be imitatetl.

Office to whom it is tendered, fulfil h f rfgoing conr!i tions as to packing and scaling, it
is his duty t.o refuse to insure it. N"v · hdess, the O•HIS of properly enclosing, packing,
and sealing the packet lies upon the sen 1 ~- : and t he Post Office assumes no liability for loss
arising from defects which may not bo obs~rved at the time of posting.
The amount for which nu ar ticlP is insured m ust be writtP.n by the s~nder both in

allowed.

ing or for more t han t ile sum entered in t he Table of Rates (pp. 62-72) against the name
of the Country or Colony to which it is address~d; but it may be insured for part of its
value. An injured letter containing documents of value on account of the cost of their
preparation (e.g., plans, estimates, contracts, etc.), may not be insured for an amount
exceeding the cost of replacing them in case of loss. Over-lnsut·ance is an obstacle to
compensation.
