The second iype o£ censorship handsiamp recorded is ihe
general single circle hands-tamp worded, ''PASSED BY" 2"nd
"NAVAL CENSOR" in sans serif type, 2.~ mm high within a single
line circle, 2.9i mm in diame~er.
~ This was the general censorship marking issued to all
U.S . Fleet Post Offi~es, {he Fleet Post Office at Portland
Bight being P.P.O. 42. However, it is also evident that
ibis censorship handls-hantp Was issued to o~her units, as it
is khown tha-t the F.P.O. was not established on the island
un~il the 15th August. 1942.
Internal covers are recorded £or Jamaica as early as
the 14th April, 1941, and as -the cov_e.rs concerned would noi
have had to leave the island 1 it must be assurn.ed -that this
censorship handstamp was also issued io the Marine Posi
Office at Poriland Bight. Ii would be logical £or that
Office to have a censorspip device, which would appear on
mail both received at ihe Office and being seni:; out by ihe
memb0rs of the Marine ~e~achmen~ and any naval personnel a~
the base.
The rnal~king has only been recorded struck in blue and
four types of this marking bave been recorded.
