applied ouiside the island by a different Maval Post Office.
Also included in this sec~ion are two Gther u.s. Maval
u censor" markings, which were applied on the. island a a they
exist on "internal" mail. The se two markings have been
allocated the provisiona~ designaiions M-USNC 3 and M-USNC 4·
Both indicate whether or not the letter has been censored
and may have been appliett a~ unit level, the Naval Post
Office or indeed, the Fleet Post Office.
In the case of some of the types re:ferred: to above -there
are variations in the basic iype of han&stamp or dater,
giving Tise to sub-groups. There is incluJed what ~ay ba
a naval post o£fice direction handsistnp, with the provisional
designation M-USNC 5, as again this appears on internal ~ail
and so must have been applied on -the islaNd.

pos~marks, is in ihe Unitea states and much research is still
to be carried ou~ once i~ is possible ~o record details and
dates.
Finally, to round of£ ~e section, especially as· ~any of
these appear on -the covers incl.uded. in this section, examples
unit handst~ps have been included. Such handstamps appear
on both inward and outward mail, and have been allocaied the
provisional designation M-USNU, marine bandstamps being
included wi1.hin -this grouping.
