                                                     1879 UPU Rate

         Upon joining the GPU on 1 Apr 1877 the standard packet rate was 6d plus 2d for letters via Brindisi (Jamaica PO notice).
                   On 1 Apr 1879, the organisation became the UPU and the standard packet rate was reduced to 4d.
            Alteration to the rate via Brindisi was not announced in Jamaica but believed to have reduced to 1d on 1 Feb 1880.

                                                    4d UPU rate plus 1d due to India and the Far East,via Brindisi.

     Colonel Arthur Chichester William Crookshank CB, Commanding 34th (Punjab) Bengal Pioneers (Sikh infantry) in Jhelum, India.
                    He was wounded during a patrol from Kolkai (gunshot to left leg) during the Hazare Expedition.
                                 His leg was amputated and he died at Haripur October 24th 1888.
