Jamaica: George VI Commemoratives.

New Constitution, 1945.

Hugh Paget, the first representative of the British Council
in Jamaica, drew the 2d design. It shows Charles II and
George VI, recalling the first General Assembly of 1664.
Rhoda Jackson (1913-71) a noted
artist and designer working in
Mandeville, produced one of the
two designs accepted from the
public. The invitation to submit
designs specified that at least one
should relate to agriculture and
labour. This, for the 2s, is intended
to symbolise Labour and Learning.

Geoffrey C. Gunter FRPSL (1879 – 1961) designed the 5s
which he submitted in the name of the Jamaica Philatelic
Society. It was then redrawn to stamp size by Claude
DeSouza. This was counted as one of the two accepted from
the public, but Gunter was very much an insider; he also
claimed to have first suggested this commemorative issue.
He was the leading light of the Jamaica Philatelic Society for
many years, Chief Accountant to the Jamaica Government
Railway and at one time Mayor of Kingston.
